If I'd Known
(Beth DeSombre)
If I’d Known
If I’d only known that the dice were loaded
That the house was favored, that the deck was stacked
I’d have cashed my chips in, cancelled all my wagers
I’d have left the table without looking back
But I didn’t; it’s too late
I just started out and put my trust in fate
Will I make it? I don’t know
But I bet I would have found a simpler road
If I’d known
If I’d only known in the final quarter
That the clock was ticking and our lead was small
I’d have played defense instead of seeking glory
I’d have been too worried that we’d lose it all
But I didn’t; it’s too late
I just started out and put my trust in fate
Will I make it? I don’t know
But I bet I would have found a simpler road
If I’d known
If I’d known how steep the path was
If I’d known the odds were low
Then I might have never started out at all
Sometimes it seems for all the struggle
Failure’s all you know
But you cannot fly if you won’t risk a fall
If I’d only known there were others listening
That the show was judged, and that the mic was live
I’d have hesitated, scared I wasn’t ready
Traded dreams of stardom for the nine-to-five
But I didn’t; it’s too late
I just started out and put my trust in fate
Will I make it? I don’t know
But I bet I would have found a simpler road
If I’d known
