February 2012 Gigs and News

February greetings --

Here's what I have for you in the shortest (but less short this year!) month of the year:

I. News
II. February and March Shows
III. Video of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Upcoming Shows

I. News

My biggest news this month is that I've taken the plunge and signed up for February Album-Writing Month (FAWM), a challenge in which songwriters attempt to write an album's-worth of songs in the shortest month of the year. FAWM has defined that, usually, as 14 songs, but this year to take account of leap year, it's 14.5. I have no idea if I can do it, but I love a good challenge, and I'm excited about spending a month focusing on songwriting.

If you want to hear what I come up with be sure to check in at my blog: http://www.bethdesombre.com/blog.html (which you can also get links to every time I post if you're a fan or friend of mine on facebook. Because I'll post links to songs when the ink isn't yet dry, I will most likely make them available only to those who have the link (rather than on my public youtube site), so if you want to hear songs as they're being written, that'll be your ticket.

I'm two lines away from completing my first song for the challenge, so be sure to check in there. And if you have a song topic to suggest, please pass it on!

II. February and March Shows

Saturday, February 18th, 2012
Byrds Tribute - 7-11 p.m.
Gulu-Gulu Cafe
247 Essex St
Salem, MA 01970
978.740.8882
Free
Dave Simmons (of Kirsten and Dave) hosts a fantastic tribute concert every year at the Gulu-Gulu Cafe. This year's show focuses on the songs of the Byrds, so join me and other Boston-area folk musicians as we work up covers of Byrds songs. It'll be a blast! I'm on third, so show up early.

Saturday, March 17th, 2012
House Concert - 7 p.m. (potluck at 6 p.m.)
Park Slope House Concert
Brooklyn, NY 11215
Price: $10 suggested donation
House concerts are my favorite way to play music. [NOTE THAT THIS SHOW WAS MOVED A WEEK LATER THAN ITS ORIGINAL DATE]

III. Video of the Month

I'm honored this month to participate on Connor Garvey's fantastic project Cover Your Friends, in which singer-songwriters perform and record songs by other singer-songwriters they know and like. I chose to play a song by the fantastic Susan Levine (who, by coincidence, I'll be sharing a show with in April). Here's the link to the entire project (my posting is fourth) so you can see all the great covers people are playing:

http://coveryourfriends.com/

IV.
Hi Folks:

Happy (almost) new year! Last year's winter convinced me to bundle up at home writing songs instead of gigging in January, so I figured I'd get this newsletter out a little early to let you know of the one show before that (brief) hiatus. Here's what I have for you this month:

I. News
II. Tonight -- New Year's Eve Show!
III. Video of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Shows booked so far in 2012

I. News

New Year's Eve is my favorite holiday: I love the chance to reflect and then to start over. I'm definitely the sort of people who makes "best of" lists, so it's a special honor to make it onto someone else's: the DJs at WFUV (one of the best folks radio stations in the country) all picked their top 10 CDs of 2011, and I made the top 10 list from Bob Sherman, host of the great show "Woody's Children." (See http://www.wfuv.org/music/best/bestof11_staff#bob). I'm excited to be included with folks like John McCutcheon, Stan Rogers (one of my all-time songwriting heroes; so good he can make top 10 lists decades after he died) Cosy Sheridan, and Brother Sun.

II. Tonight -- New Year's Eve Show!

It's become a tradition to play at New Year's Needham, the version of Boston's First Night for the western suburbs, and each year the folk offerings grow:

Saturday, December 31st, 2011Ӭ6-6:45 p.m.ӬNew Year's Needham
870 Great Plain Avenue (Christian Science Church)
Needham, MA 02492
Free with event button ($5)ӬI'll be back again for my annual show as part of Needham's New Year's Eve celebration -- it's a tradition! Come join me (and the fantastic Mike Delaney) as we ring in the new year. Different location -- this year we're at the Christian Scientist Church -- but same time, and as in past years I'll be following the fabulous Kirsten and Dave (who will themselves be following Dan and Faith). Other great performers later in the evening -- make a night of it!

III. Video of the Month

In honor of the time of year, here's a version of my song Resolution, performed at First Night Needham a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4ebAkIGqDE

IV.
December 2011 Gigs and News

Hi folks:

December?! How did it get to be December?! Nevertheless, it seems to have arrived, so here's what I have for you this month, most importantly being an appearance on the radio TONIGHT (December 1st). Details below:

I. News
II. December Shows
III. Video Audio of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Preview of 2012 Shows

I. News

This is a month of radio, including two different appearances on my favorite folk radio show, The Folk Revival on WICN in Worcester. Nick Noble creates fantastic themed shows that demonstrate his wide knowledge of and appreciation for folk music, broadly defined, and he's a big supporter of local artists. For the last few years I've joined him to play live and co-host his last show of the year, honoring the voices lost to the music world this year. But we decided that it might make sense for me to ALSO play live on a night that focused less on loss, so I'll be playing TONIGHT -- December 1st -- on Nick's show focusing on local musicians. Details in "December shows" and if you're not local, you can tune in on the internet!

Also among my musical end-of December traditions is welcoming the new year by performing at New Year's Needham. Although December is usually much too full with various obligations, I look forward every year to these musical traditions.

II. December Shows

Thursday, December 1st, 2011
Playing Live! - 7-11 p.m.
WICN Folk Revival
90.5 fm
Worcester and online!, MA
508.752.0700
The Folk Revival is one of the best radio programs out there -- Nick Noble carefully curates a show each week with some of the best local and national musicians and current and classic songs. I'm honored to be his guest this week and play some live -- and new -- songs on the air. Tune in on the web (http://www.wicn.org/listen-live-online) or on the radio. You're most likely to hear me play at several different intervals between 7:30 and 9:30, and chatting with Nick on the air between other songs he plays.

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011
Co-hosting the Annual Tribute Show - 7-11 p.m.
WICN Folk Revival
90.5 fm
Worcester and online!, MA
508.752.0700
Nick Noble hosts one of the best folk radio programs on the air these days. Each week he has a theme, and it has become my tradition to join Nick and as a co-host for the year-end show to honor those voices we've lost in music during the year. Nick has an encyclopedic knowledge of music and the annual tribute show always introduces me to people whose music I wish I'd known, and others I already knew to miss. It's an honor to co-host this show with him and a joy to listen.

Saturday, December 31st, 2011
6-6:45 p.m.
New Year's Needham
870 Great Plain Avenue (Christian Science Church)
Needham, MA 02492
Price: Free with event button ($5)
I'll be back again for my annual show as part of Needham's New Year's Eve celebration -- it's a tradition! Come join me as we ring in the new year. Different location -- this year we're at the Christian Scientist Church -- but same time, and as in past years I'll be following the fabulous Kirsten and Dave.

III. Video Audio of the Month

Still no video -- I was sick enough in November that you wouldn't have been able to hear the shows I had planned to record. But in honor of the holiday season, I'll post the final take of the preliminary audio I posted in a previous month -- my new agnostic Christmas song -- and make it downloadable for free:

http://www.bethdesombre.com/music-28.html

IV.
August 2011 Gigs and News

Happy August, everyone!

I'm of mixed feelings about August, actually; too much to do before the end of the summer (including a book I have to finish writing) and not enough time to do it. But there's still lots more time for music this summer. Here's what I have for you this month:

I. News
II. August Shows
III. Video of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Other Upcoming Shows

I. News -- far afield and then back home

I've been traveling in recently; had shows in 6 different states in June and July. (Including playing in the finals of the Susanne Millsaps Performing Songwriter Competition at the Snowbird Mountain Music Festival. I didn't win, but I had a blast.) The month I'll stay close to home, but the shows are a bit unusual (see below).

And most importantly, the show on August 28th will be broadcast live on the web! So tune in to my very first webcast -- those of you not in those six states I've recently visited or the Boston area can nevertheless get the chance to see a live show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeESEUEg6xE (you can even set it up to send you an email reminder the day before so you remember to tune in!)

II. August Shows

Friday, August 19th, 2011
Kicking off the Eco-Stage - noon
Boston Greenfest
Boston City Hall Plaza
Boston, MA 02109
Free!
The region's largest multicultral environmental festival, and I'll be the first music performer on the eco-stage. I'll be joined by Mike Delaney on mandolin and vocals; stick around, he plays his own set at 2. Stop by to hear some great music and learn ways to green our lives and our communities.

Sunday, August 28th, 2011
Live @ Best Buy - 3 p.m.
Best Buy
360 Newbury Street
Boston, MA 02115
617.375.7412
Free
I'll be playing live in the Newbury Street Best Buy in Boston -- and the show will be streamed live on the web! Join me in person or on the internet for an exciting show.

III. Video of the Month -- a new song!

Here's a song so new it may not even be finished, filmed in the lovely lavender light of the Somerville Center for Arts at the Armory, a wonderful new venue. The song is called The Disarray:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeESEUEg6xE

IV.
July 2011 News and Gigs

Hi folks:

We're deep in the throes of summer folk festival season. I just realized that there are 5 weekends in July and I'll be spending four of them at festivals and the other one on tour. Details below. Here's what I have for you this month:

I. News
II. July Shows
III. Video of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Other Upcoming Shows

I. News

Much news to share. The most exciting piece of news is that I'm a finalist in the Susanne Millsaps Performing Songwriter Competition, which means I have been invited to play in the finals at the Snowbird Mountain Music Festival in July in Utah. I could not be more excited! If you're looking for an excuse to try a new festival, I'm happy to provide one if you want to come out and cheer me on.

I'm also embarking on what we're calling the "at home on this crooked highway" mini-tour -- three shows in three different states in three nights, beginning with my first show ever in New York, on July 7th at Banjo Jim's.

Finally, looking ahead to August, I also have some exciting and unusual shows booked, including at Boston Greenfest (on City Hall Plaza) and one Live From Best Buy -- that's in Boston, but it will be webcast, so even if I haven't yet made it to your town I can visit your computer.

II. July Shows

[AT HOME ON THIS CROOKED HIGHWAY mini-tour]:

Thursday, July 7th, 2011
8 p.m.
Banjo Jim's
700 E 9th St
New York, NY 10009
212.777.0869
one drink minimum
Banjo Jim's is a lower east side bar (you can bring your own food) that creates a great listening room for music seven nights a week. I'm delighted to make my first NYC appearance here, playing after the fantastic and mango-obsessed Bob Katz (http://bobkatzmusic.com/bobkatzmusic.com/index.html) with Carolyn Waters (http://www.carolynwatersmusic.com/) at 7 p.m.

Friday, July 8th, 2011
Songwriter Sessions - 7:30 p.m.
The Vanilla Bean Cafe
450 Deerfield Rd
Pomfret, CT 06258
860.974.1691
$5
Songwriters in the round (I'll be joined by Fiske & Herrera), hosted by Lisa Martin. In addition to playing our best material, we've been given a songwriting topic by the previous month's audience. Come hear the song we've each written on the topic of "good neighbors" that we'll debut at this show. (The Vanilla Bean also has fantastic food.)

Saturday, July 9th, 2011
Somerville Songwriter Sessions - 8-10:30 p.m.
The Center for Arts at the Armory
191 Highland Avenue
Somerville, MA 02143
617. 718.2191
$10
I'll be joined by three other songwriters (Kristen Sweetland (http://www.kristinsweetland.com/), Joel Cage (http://www.joelcage.com/), and Tracie Potochnik (http://www.facebook.com/traciepotochnik)) and host John Fuzek for an evening of songwriting. Stop by, have some wine and beer, and listen to great songwriting!

Saturday, July 16th, 2011
Finalist in the Susanne Millsaps Performing Songwriter Competition - noon - 2:45 p.m.
Snowbird Mountain Music Festival
Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort
Snowbird, UT 84092
1-800-232-9542
Free!
I'm one of 10 finalists in the Susanne Millsaps Performing Songwriter Competition, and we all get the opportunity to perform live at the Mountain Music Festival.

Sunday, July 31st, 2011
Folk Festival Showcase - 4 p.m.
Furey's Cafe
51 Fletcher St.
Lowell, MA 01854
978.970.2495
Free! (21)
The Lowell Folk Festival is a fantastic, free, festival taking place in the middle of the city of Lowell, MA. I've been selected for an associated showcase, run by Furey's Cafe. I'll be backed by the lovely and talented Mike Delaney on mandolin and vocals. Visit the festival in general, and stop by to hear us play at Furey's.

And I'll probably be leading the annual Dave Carter song circle at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (most likely on the Sunday morning); if you'll be at Falcon Ridge and want details, let me know. It's one of the highlights of my musical year.

III. Video of the Month

One of the last to share from the CD release show. Cross that River (with my all-star backing band):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsXN9Jh5-Ac

With all sorts of interesting shows on the horizon, I promise to get some new videos up soon.

IV.
Hi folks:

It's summer music season -- more travel, more shows outdoors, and less scheduling in that pesky day-job to keep me from writing and playing music! (Well, okay, there is that book I have to finish writing, but at least I get to do it in an unscheduled way). Here's what I have for you this month:

I. News
II. June Shows
III. So for those of you who have been wondering if I'm coming to your town, check out the schedule and maybe I am! And if I'm not, let me know where you are (and, most importantly, where the folk venues in your area are) and I'll do my best to get there.

And keep an eye out -- there are a couple of interesting shows in the works this summer that haven't been sufficiently nailed down to include in this newsletter, but if you keep an eye out in cyberspace I'll let you know where and when they end up.

II.

Hi folks:

Happy May! Spring in New England is like autumn in reverse: the leaves come out the color they eventually turn after summer's over. And for me it's a sign that we're heading into summer festival season, when most of the best music takes place outdoors. Here's what I have for you this month:

I. News
II. May shows
III. Video of the Month
IV. Beth in Cyberspace
V. Other Upcoming Shows

I. News

My song "Bigger, Faster, and More" is in the finals of a "music for the earth" songwriting contest -- right now, it's the fan voting period. You can listen to any of the songs (including mine) on this website: http://earthday.sonicbids.com/BandDetails.aspx?b=28427&bn=BethDeSombre

Clicking the "download" button is what counts as a "vote" -- you'll have to input your email address, and then click on the link they send you. Please consider downloading my song to help me make it to the final judging round. You can only download once per email address, so let your friends know as well.

I hope you like the song -- it was inspired by the BP oil disaster, which began just about a year ago, but tells the story of the longer history of problems facing those small-scale fishers who try to make their living from the gulf.

II. May shows

Monday, May 9th, 2011
Open Mike Feature - 8-10 p.m.
The Hallway (http://thehallwayjp.com/)
66A South Street
Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
617.818.5996
Free
I'm the featured act (I'll play for about 45 minutes) at an open mike at a great art gallery and gathering place. Come by to play or just listen!

Thursday, May 19th, 2011
Trio show with Mike Delaney and Ken Porter - 8 p.m.
Harvest Cafe (http://www.harvestcafeonline.com/)
40 Washington Street
Hudson, MA 02749
978.567.0948
Free (donations requested)
The Harvest Cafe is one of those great community hangouts; good food, nice people, and, sometimes, great music! Ken, Mike, and I each play our own songs (with backing from the others) and also have a set of trio songs we only play when we play together. Which hasn't happened often enough, lately, so come see us while you have the chance!

Thursday, May 26th, 2011
Club Bohemia - 8 p.m. to midnight
Cantab Lounge http://www.cantab-lounge.com/)
738 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02139
617.354.2685
$5 (21)
A show featuring a bunch of great local musicians, organized by Sierra (www.sierrarocks.com). Details to follow soon.

III. Video of the Month

Another video from the CD release show. This one is of the song Fiddle Player, and I'm backed by the fabulous Jim Henry, Dave Chalfant, and Jenny Goodspeed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnExNhQUXWc

IV.
