Our Love Was
(Beth DeSombre)
Our Love Was
Once upon a midnight dark and dreary
Seeking shelter from a storm
We each were drawn to flick’ring firelight eerie
Hoping its flames would keep us warm
When dawn awoke and spread the day before us
We gave thanks for what we found
Our separate songs now joined as one in chorus
To bless the newly hallowed ground
Our love was shiny like silver
And our love spun straw into gold
But the love we promised forever
Would be hard to have and hold
We set off down the winding road together
With talk of dragons we would slay
We questioned how but never why or whether
To seek our fate so far away
But mystic pilgrimage can be exhausting
And psychic wounds are slow to mend
You said our quest was merely windmill-tilting
Without a swift or fruitful end
Our love was shiny like silver
And our love spun straw into gold
But the love we promised forever
Is no longer brave or bold
When we returned from distant exploration
To live the life we had postponed
I yearned for grace,; you wanted isolation
And so you wandered off alone
And now the sun is hidden in the shadows
I light a flame against the chill
My lonely voice is quiet when the wind blows
I wonder if you love me still
Our love was shiny like silver
And our love spun straw into gold
But the love we promised forever
Has now withered and grown cold
