What I'll Leave Behind

A cabinet of hotel soaps I swore I’d use some day
Cowboy boots one size too small I tried to give away
Seven types of oolong tea and thirteen more of green
Cluttering the spaces in between

What I’ll leave behind when I go
What I’ll leave behind
I can guess but still I don’t know
What I’ll leave behind

Journals since the age of twelve, a documented life
And in case of crisis: candles, and a pocketknife
Plus of course the instruments, and tuners, capos, strings
How could I get by without these things?

What I’ll leave behind when I go
What I’ll leave behind
I can guess but still I don’t know
What I’ll leave behind

Memories of conversations late into the night
Situations of injustice that I helped put right
A few good friends, some new ideas, and, I hope, some songs
That you might remember when I’m gone

What I’ll leave behind when I go
What I’ll leave behind
I can guess but still I don’t know
What I’ll leave behind

What I’ll leave behind when I go
What I’ll leave behind
I can guess but still I don’t know
What I’ll leave behind
What I’ll leave behind
What I’ll leave behind
